Green and purple Northern Lights over the Almannagjá rift at Þingvellir National Park

Private Tour · 4–5 Hours

Northern Lights Tour

No fixed spot, no crowd, no coach — just the forecast, the dark, and a guide who knows where the sky will open.

The Experience

Northern Lights, Privately

Seeing the aurora is a matter of three things: darkness, a clear sky and solar activity. The first is guaranteed from late August to April. The second is why a private tour matters — cloud cover in Iceland is local and changeable, and a fixed destination is the wrong strategy.

We do it differently. On the evening of your tour your guide reads the cloud and aurora forecasts and chooses a direction — Þingvellir, the Reykjanes coast, the South Coast lowlands — that gives you the best odds. If the sky closes in, we move. If it opens somewhere else, we go there.

Between sightings you wait in a warm, quiet vehicle rather than a car park, with hot drinks on board. When the lights come, your guide will help you set up a camera or phone so that you take home more than a memory. And because nature keeps her own schedule, if the forecast is hopeless we will tell you honestly and offer another night.

Step by Step

How the Evening Unfolds

  1. The forecast

Late in the afternoon your guide studies the cloud map and the aurora forecast and calls or messages you with the plan: the direction we will head, the departure time — typically between 20:00 and 21:30 — and what to wear.

  2. Leaving the city glow

We collect you at your hotel and drive out beyond the lights of the capital. Within thirty to forty minutes the sky darkens completely and the stars come out; from here the hunt begins.

  3. Finding the gap

Your guide moves between vantage points chosen for open horizons to the north and shelter from the wind — the shore of a lake, the edge of a lava field, a rift at Þingvellir — always working the gaps in the cloud.

  4. The show

When the aurora arrives it can be a faint green arc or a sky full of moving curtains. Either way, you have as long as you want. Your guide handles the camera settings and, if you wish, takes your photographs beneath the lights.

  5. Home, warm

Back in the vehicle, hot chocolate and a slow drive back to Reykjavík — usually well after midnight if the sky has been kind.
