Icelanders call Snæfellsnes 'Iceland in miniature' because almost everything the country is known for appears on this one peninsula: a glacier-crowned volcano, lava fields, basalt cliffs, golden and black beaches, fishing villages and a mountain so photogenic it has become a symbol of the island.
It is a long drive from Reykjavík, which is exactly why most visitors never make it — and why the peninsula still feels like a discovery for the clients you send there. A full day in a private vehicle turns that distance into an asset: the peninsula's coastal roads are among the finest drives in Iceland.
Snæfellsjökull, the glacier at the tip, was the gateway to the underworld in Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth. It watches over the whole day, appearing and vanishing in the weather.

Ytri-Tunga seal beach and Búðakirkja
A golden beach on the south shore where harbour seals haul out on the rocks, followed by the small black timber church at Búðir standing alone in a lava field — one of the most quietly beautiful places in Iceland.
Arnarstapi and Hellnar
Two fishing hamlets beneath Stapafell mountain, joined by a coastal path through a lava field alive with seabirds. Basalt cliffs, the Gatklettur rock arch and the giant stone figure of Bárður Snæfellsás, the peninsula's guardian spirit, mark the walk.
Djúpalónssandur
A black pebble beach reached through a lava ravine. Four ancient lifting stones on the shore once tested whether a man was strong enough to crew a fishing boat; rusted fragments of a British trawler wrecked in 1948 still lie among the pebbles.
Snæfellsjökull National Park
The road rounds the tip of the peninsula beneath the glacier itself, past the Saxhóll crater — a short climb for a view over the lava plain to the sea — and the lighthouses at the westernmost edge.
Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss
The 'Church Mountain' rises alone from the north shore beside the town of Grundarfjörður, with a small waterfall in the foreground that photographers travel across the world to frame beneath it. Where the programme allows, we time the arrival for the best light of the season.
